Getting Breast Augmentation in Korea: How Long to Stay, Recovery Time, and Aftercare for International Patients

Are you living abroad and considering breast augmentation in South Korea? International patients often ask how long they need to stay in Korea, when they can safely fly home after surgery, and how they can manage their recovery once they return home.

In this video, I’ll explain how to prepare for breast augmentation in Korea, including preoperative consultations, the recommended length of stay, recovery, and postoperative care.

1. How Long Should You Stay in Korea for Breast Augmentation?

If you are traveling to South Korea for breast augmentation, it is generally advisable to plan a stay of approximately 10 days to two weeks. Even if your schedule is tight, I recommend arranging a postoperative follow-up appointment about one week after surgery.

Although breast augmentation is often a relatively short procedure, you still need time for consultations, medical examinations, recovery, and a postoperative assessment. For this reason, it is helpful to allow at least one or two days after arrival for preparation rather than scheduling surgery immediately after landing.

2. Online Consultations and 3D Breast Augmentation Simulation

International patients can begin the consultation process online before traveling to Korea. By providing front-facing and 45-degree breast photos, along with measurements such as the distance between the nipples, patients may be able to review an AI-assisted 3D simulation.

This preliminary consultation can help discuss the approximate breast size, implant options, and possible surgical approaches before arrival.

However, a simulation is only a reference tool. The final surgical plan must be determined after an in-person consultation and an assessment of your anatomy, breast tissue, skin elasticity, and overall condition.

3. What Should You Prepare Before Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Before surgery, medical examinations may be necessary to assess your suitability for the procedure. Depending on your health and the clinic’s protocol, these may include blood tests, a chest X-ray, and an electrocardiogram.

If you have any existing medical conditions or take prescription medications or supplements, inform your surgeon in advance. Some medications or supplements may need to be adjusted before surgery, but you should never stop taking them without instructions from your medical team.

You should also follow all preoperative fasting instructions and other precautions provided by your clinic.

4. What Happens on the Day of Surgery?

Breast augmentation is generally not a lengthy procedure. Depending on your health, anesthesia plan, and the clinic’s protocol, you may be able to return to your accommodation on the same day.

However, discharge arrangements and the type of anesthesia used depend on your individual circumstances and surgical plan.

After surgery, you need adequate time to recover. Avoid strenuous arm movements, heavy lifting, and activities that put unnecessary strain on your chest. In particular, lifting a heavy suitcase or placing luggage in an overhead compartment may increase the risk of bleeding and other complications.

5. Your One-Week Follow-Up and Postoperative Bra

At approximately one week after surgery, your surgeon can assess your recovery and incision sites and provide further postoperative instructions.

Wearing the appropriate bra after breast augmentation is an important part of recovery. The type of bra you should wear during the day, at night, or during exercise—and how long you should wear it—depends on your surgical technique and healing progress.

Be sure to follow your surgeon’s instructions regarding supportive garments, taping, scar care, and restrictions on daily activities.

6. Online Aftercare After Returning Home

Before traveling to Korea, international patients should ask whether their clinic offers postoperative support after they return home.

If online consultations are available, you may be able to share photos and describe any discomfort or changes during recovery. This can help your medical team provide guidance when appropriate.

However, online consultations cannot replace an in-person medical examination. If you experience severe or sudden pain, rapidly increasing swelling, a sudden change in the size of one breast, fever, or difficulty breathing, seek immediate medical attention locally rather than waiting for an online response.

7. When Will You See the Final Results of Breast Augmentation?

It can take several months for postoperative swelling to subside and the breasts to settle into a more natural shape. Evaluating the final results may take approximately six months to one year.

Rather than judging the outcome immediately after surgery, follow your surgeon’s instructions and attend recommended follow-up appointments to monitor your recovery.

If you are planning to travel to South Korea for breast augmentation, remember to consider more than just the surgery itself. Preoperative consultations, medical examinations, the length of your stay, and aftercare once you return home are all important parts of the process.

Allow enough time for recovery in Korea and work with your surgeon to develop a plan that takes your individual health and healing progress into account.
